As a daughter without her dad on Father’s Day, I know the pain of grief that this day may hold for you whether you have lost your father or experienced a complicated relationship with him. This day, filled with celebrations and happy memories for many, can bring up waves upon waves of grief for others. So, today I want to share ways to navigate Father’s Day grief and some of my top grief resources.

First, I want to assure you that you are not alone in your grief. With support, it is possible to navigate this emotional landscape with hope and find ways to honor the memory of your father or the father figure in your life.

6 Ways to Navigate Father’s Day

  • Honor the grief: Recognize and give space for your emotions without judgment; it’s okay to feel sad, angry, or numb. Acknowledging the grief really makes a difference.
  • Honor your Dad: Honor your father by lighting a candle, writing a letter, or visiting a special place.
  • Share Memories with Loved Ones: Share stories with family or friends to feel connected and less isolated. I love it when my family and I share stories about loved ones. It really comforts my heart.
  • Engage in Self-Care: Take care of yourself with activities that bring peace and comfort, like walking, listening to worship, or reading the Bible or your favorite book.
  • Seek Support: Talk to friends, join a support group, or seek professional help if you’re struggling.
  • Honor the hope: Just as we honor the grief, may we also make space for hope. Reflect on positive memories and lessons learned, and think about how to carry your father’s legacy forward.

A Prayer for Comfort and Hope

Lord, we thank you for knowing exactly how we feel on today and in the days to come on this Father’s Day. Surround us with your love, comfort, and peace as we remember our fathers. Bring healing to those navigating complicated relationships and those hurting hearts missing their dad in this season. And give us the strength to navigate grief with the hope we have in you. Surround us with your presence and the support we need. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
